OK, let’s put our cards on the table, The Abaco Club on Winding Bay is not a typical golf resort. For a start, you can only come here once as a non-member and then, if you want to come again, you’ll have to join the club. Secondly the course is not an ordinary resort course where generally you can knock the ball around with gay abandon – miss the fairways here and you can wave goodbye to your ball. Thirdly this is not a hotel where you’ll find your room at the end of a long soulless corridor. The Abaco Club is a discerning sporting retreat, which is totally unique, charmingly understated and situated in one of the most heavenly locations on earth.
You’ll find The Abaco Club on Winding Bay, 150 miles to the east of Miami. The stunning islands of the Abacos stretch like a string of precious jewels through the aquamarine Atlantic Ocean. Great Abaco Island is more than 100 miles long and the third largest Bahamian island. Nestled on a peninsula beside the turquoise waters and a brilliant 2¼-mile powder soft sandy beach, lies the Abaco Club on Winding Bay, the brainchild of British entrepreneur and world-class yachtsman Peter de Savary, who spotted the potential of Winding Bay on a sailing trip. After coming ashore and clearing a path through the tropical undergrowth with a machete, he declared; “This is it!” $250m later, the Abaco Club was born.
The serenity of The Abaco Club is one of its many charms where the staff, or rather the team, are genuinely warm and friendly. The atmosphere is totally relaxed where you can kick off your shoes and stroll along the beach to dinner in barefoot elegance. There’s as much or as little to do at The Abaco Club as you desire. The beach is one of the most beautiful in the world and the bay is warm and shallow which allows for perfectly safe swimming. Perhaps you’d prefer a deep sea fishing trip where your knowledgeable skipper will take you to the best waters for Blue Fin Tuna or Wahoo. Make sure to have lunch and at least one of their famous Winding Bay Wind-up cocktails at the rustic, thatch roofed beach bar. A relaxing massage waits at the Elemis Spa or you may simply prefer to laze by the infinity pool which overlooks the vivid turquoise waters of Winding Bay. We can think of nowhere on earth we’d rather be.
We are not going to mention the golf in any great detail here, but take it from us that this is one of the best golfing experiences that you will encounter but make sure you have enough golf balls! Click here to find out more about this special tropical links course.
