Seapoint  – nominated by Fergal – added 26th August 2006 – words by Fergal

Seapoint Golf Links adjoins County Louth Golf Club (better known as Baltray) on the same stretch of links. It is a Des Smyth designed course measuring 7,200 yards. Although a young course, it has some superb par fours and a great finishing stretch along the coast.

If the adjacent County Louth course is off the golfing radar of most people then Seapoint must be positively subterranean in comparison! Maybe it’s because it has only been in existence for such a short time – it was only designed by Des Smyth in the early 1990s – that it is taking some time to build a reputation next to a course established in 1892 that still struggles for recognition!

Seapoint is a championship course that extends to over 7,100 yards from the back tees, with a par of 72. Located beside Termonfeckin Beach on the east coast and with fantastic views of the Cooley and Mourne Mountains in the background, it is routed through two hundred and sixty acres of largely unspoiled, rugged links land.

Former Irish Amateur Internationalist Declan Branigan assisted in the original design and he was the driving force behind further course developments in 2004/5, including the introduction of some water hazards on several of the opening holes.

The first few holes have a parkland feel to them as trees border the west side of the property. The 443-yard 4th and 423-yard 5th are two back-to-back par fours where water comes into play around the greens to make life difficult early on.

The majority of the round is then played out on fairly open, intuitively laid out links with crisp fairways, imaginative bunkering and firm greens. The rough, however, is punishing for any truly wayward shots. A particularly demanding stretch occurs at the long par fours – all over four hundred yards long – from the 11th (with nine bunkers) to the 14th (with a blind green).

The four closing holes are sited in sand hills running along the shore and they culminate in the closing 560-yard par five, where some original bunkers have been removed in recent remodeling and the putting surface re-contoured.

Though not as well known or "classic" as neighbors like Baltray, The Island and Portmarnock, Seapoint is a very worthwhile addition to any golf intinerary along Ireland's east coast. A great warm-up round en route from Dublin airport before tackling County Down or Royal Portrush.

Seapoint is a brilliant links course, challenging but fair. A strong wind causes havoc but wide fairways give you some kind of chance! Greens are excellent and watch out for the par 3 17th hole - many a good round can crumble here and float away into the Irish sea...

I played this course for the first time yesterday and it was a fantastic experience. The course is a pure joy to play and the greens are the best ive ever played on - all 18 or them were perfect. the fairways are very well maintained and quite wide but the way the wind was blowing yesterday it was still very hard keeping it on the short stuff. the bunkers are what you come to expect on a links course - deep and unforgiving - and plenty on them too. their position on the course was very cleverly planned and would gobble up any stray drives or approaches. each hole proved very strong with no let up in quality and a few holes even had water/streams on them which added to the experience. best links course ive played by a mile as there is no week hole and as each hole seems to go in a different direction, the wind changes with every shot. also there was only two blind shots all course - one drive and one approach - which is a characteristic some golfers look for in a course. i noticed there were a lot of greenstaff around the place so they take very good care of their course. i also noticed that we were nearly the only ones on the course - no one near us for 5 holes either side which leads me to think that not too many people know about this place....yet. I definatly 110% recommend this place to any level of golfer and if you are within a 10 hour drive of this place it is a must play course!! PS - the green fee is a complete bargain too.

Extremely challenging course always presented in a good condition and a challenging layout. The course changes with every shift of the wind. When combined with its neighbour Baltray it makes an extremely and enjoyable two centre day out.

Fergal has made an impartial summation of the lnks at Seapoint. Further remodelling has taken place over Winter 2006 which will definately add to the golfing test. This is a progressive club definately going places as testified by the current Golf Digest Ireland rankings (May 2007) which place Seapoint in 49th place of all golf courses in Ireland. A great test of golf at reasonable cost - a must for visitors and just 30 minutes north of Dublin.
