Royal Jersey – nominated by Simon – added 15th February 2005 – words by Simon

I have played Royal Jersey twice now, each time during the family holiday, so it’s with great trepidation that I’m nominating Royal Jersey, because I’d hate people to dismiss it as purely a holiday course. I have played dozens of links courses in all corners of the British Isles, but I do have a soft spot for this course. It’s not of championship length, but you need to be accurate from the tee to score well and the 1st hole is one of the finest openers I’ve ever played.

Royal Jersey is laid out on delightful sandy ground, flanked to the east by Royal Grouville Bay. This is where Harry Vardon cut his golfing teeth.

There aren't many courses in the world where you gaze at a castle and a Royal bay and the hazards that you have to worry about on the 1st tee are a fort, the beach and bunkers - but of the German variety and not the sandy ! Harry Vardon's statue graces the entrance and his spirit is definitely alive on the links, as too Ted Ray - he and Harry Vardon both won the US Open. Watch "The Greatest Game Ever Played" before playing here. Some excellent holes and uniformly good condition, and can only agree about the wine list - take the bus or taxi but don't drive ! Hello to Luke too ! Dan

Played many times and I still get a buzz teeing it up on the 1st with Gorey Castle and the coast of France in the distance. Not long but it can play tough like most links courses when the wind blows. If you keep a score going watch out for holes 15 & 16, both par 3’s but never easy. Great clubhouse with hospitable staff and members alike, must have one of the best wine lists of any golf club I’ve visited.

I really enjoyed playing here, more so than La Moye, which has a better reputation. I think the main reason is that Royal Jersey has so much history and it also plays close enough to the beach that you can taste it. It also has the spirit of Harry Vardon. A thoroughly entertaining place.

im a member of the royal and it really is a great course. while its not championship length like La moye it is more of a challenge because of the tight fairways. any player can stand on the tee and have a thrash, find it in the rough and do it again. but it takes real talent to keep it straight. If you play the royal in the winter with the knee high rough i have come to live with you relise that it is a real challenge.
