Collingtree Park Golf Club is Johnny Miller’s first "Signature" course in the British Isles. The former British Open champion was no ordinary golfer and Miller’s 18-hole creation at Northampton is no ordinary golf course. After significant earthworks, 275 acres of uninspiring meadowland has been transformed into an exciting golf course, which opened for play in 1990. Luxury homes flank the fairways and over 11 acres of water wait to catch anything but the most perfectly struck shot.

Clearly proud of his creation, Miller said: "Great Britain is sacred ground for me...I've always wanted to design a course on British soil. We tried very hard to design a course that would speak to today's player and, at the same time, preserve the natural beauty of the land and the sense of tradition that's so much a part of golf in the British Isles."  The PGA European Tour soon recognised Miller’s achievement. In 1995, and again in 1996, Collingtree Park hosted the British Masters – Sam Torrance and Robert Allenby claimed the titles.

The layout can be stretched to almost 7,000 yards from the back tees, but from the forward tees, the course is very playable and most enjoyable for the average golfer – providing, of course, that the numerous water hazards are avoided.  There is a number of memorable holes, but it’s the long par five 18th that everyone talks about and it’s worthy of the excellent value green fee alone. After a solid drive and a lay up second shot, you’ll be presented with your third to an island green – a touch of Sawgrass in the Midlands. Make no mistake, a par at Collingtree Park’s closing hole is one to savour.

I played this course in early December and was impressed. Weather had been dreadful (about an inch of rain that morning) but it drained pretty well. There are some decent holes with well-kept greens and some subtlety required as well as length. Well worth an economical weekday green fee, and full English breakfast for about a fiver decent value too! Look forward to playing in summer.

A good mix of holes here, but target golf is the order of the day. Its not all about the 18th(what a great hole), super condition greens that were quick and true with many undulations on most greens. Other holes of note are the 4th, 9th and 11th, a super set of par 5's. Plenty of water holes and thick rough require accurate hitting all the way round. On the downside a lot of the bunkers weren't raked and in poor condition, infact a couple didn't even have rakes. Don't let that put you off though. A friendly welcome and a great meal in a scenic clubhouse finish off the day nicely.

Poor condition, noisy and the 18th. apart hardly a memorable hole. Do yourself a favour and go a few miles down the road and play Northants County at Church Brampton.

This course is worth a lot more than what he has rated it. There are many memorable holes, such as the 4th, the 9th, and the 11th.

this is a somewhat unfair review - the course is very tough and long, the challenges are varied and there are definitely holes with character and a good bit of charm. this course stands up well in an area not short of a cracking golf course or two
Superb layout and design, probably the best in the area, although the course does need more spending on maintenance. The bunkers have been half empty and GUR for 4 months and the greens are not as good as they were in past years

Collingtree Park played host to several high profile charity events this year as well as hosting a round of the European Pro Tour. The feedback from the players was that this was one of the two top courses they play on across the country. Sure it may be noisy on a couple of the back 9 holes, but the staff are very very warm and welcoming and the course is kept immaculately throughout the year with the bunkers being upgraded this coming winter (long overdue). I doubt there are many courses out there that are as well kept, challenging whilst retaining very good value for money. As you guessed I am a fan of this place, and I doubt many players will play on a course this varied and enjoyable ever, but they really should even if it's just the once!

An exciting layout with plenty of water. Some good holes, most notably the 10th and 18th. Can play tough, especially from the back tees, so don't bite off more than you can chew. Not the most natural of courses but it's about as good as it gets in an area bereft of top quality golf courses.

Was once used as a European Tour venue and got slated by the players for the awful greens. I don't remember the greens being that bad on the two occasions I played here but I do remember the long walks between holes - it's American designed remember so they were obviously thinking you'd use a buggy! As mentioned below the 18th is a great hole but to be honest little else sticks in the memory. Worth a try but I wouldn't go out of my way to play it again. Lee A.

A great central venue for societies with a far flung membership. The 18th is worth the trip alone with an island green on a tough par 5 - not quite like a long version of the par 3 17th at Sawgrass, but its as close as I'll ever get to something similar.
