Garnant Park Golf Club  – nominated by Rod – added 27th November 2006 - words by Rod:

Voted best new course in Wales 2003 and well deserved. Good variety of holes, excellent greens and very friendly. Must visit.

Garnant Park was created in the mid 1990s at a cost of almost £1m on land that was formerly part of the Garnant opencast coal mine. Indeed, several holes – like “Wernos” at the 10th and “Wheal Morgan” at the 12th – are named after local mineral workings.

Built on a 120-acre site on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park, Carmarthenshire County Council runs the course and it boasts a tidy clubhouse with magnificent views of the Black and Betws Mountains from the main lounge.

Garnant Park is one of the best municipal golfing facilities in Wales with tees and greens constructed to USGA standard. A feature hole is “Pontyclerc,” the first short hole on the card at the 5th, where a pond and a couple of bunkers protect the front of the putting surface.

Garnant Park is an interesting course and worth playing but not comparable with the likes of Southerndown.

What a course!! Probably one of the best courses in Wales, just 10 years old at it has matured into an amazing course with good facilities. The greens are something that would fit in any world class links, undulating quick and true. The conditioning is excellent. Great Value for money lovely Welcome form all the staff and an amazing view over the National Parks motains make this a very unique and interting Course to visit.

Very challenging course both physically and mentally, most of the lies are either above or below your feet, very well laid out, the course was a bit thin when I played it first, i.e. take a divot and there was evidence of opencast mining underneath but that was then, I played it earlier this Summer and it was a joy to play but exceptionally difficult, you need to play it a few times, top quality greens. When you visit here and play to your handicap, you are off the wrong handicap its at least 2 - 3 shots more difficult. Easy to get too, great food, friendly welcome, well worth a visit - but bring your best game!
